Case Study

Nene Valley Winery

Nene Valley Vineyard

Nene Valley Winery was set-up by two Northamptonshire families, each with established vineyards, that felt for them and many other local vineyards transporting grapes for over two hours to an external contract winery was no longer practical. With their family’s estates totalling some 45,000 vines and targeting producing over 100,000 bottles annually, Will Croxford and Dennis Hall partnered to establish a fully operational winery in Northamptonshire. Not only would this serve their own estates, but they would also offer a high-quality, service-led contract winery facility for other local vineyards.

Faced with the challenge of launching a fully operational winery, Will and Dennis sought a seamless, turnkey solution for their winemaking equipment. Early in the planning process, they engaged with Core Equipment, who provided detailed equipment specifications, technical drawings and project management, helping bring their vision to life with clarity and precision.

“Core was the obvious choice—we wanted the best equipment and the best service. Core’s involvement from the early stages of the project, alongside the technical expertise of Salvatore Leone (Nene Valley Winery’s consultant winemaker) gave the team the confidence to select the best equipment and layout for the winery. He was particularly impressed by the support provided by the entire Core Equipment team—from Business Manager, Jeaffreson Paterson, to the installation engineers who not only installed and commissioned the equipment but also provided comprehensive training to the Nene Valley Winery operational team.”

Core designed a custom solution to meet their unique requirements. The winery was equipped to accommodate 35 Letina tanks, each featuring the latest technology, including:

  • Compartment Tanks – These multi-chamber tanks are becoming increasingly popular in UK wineries. Manufactured by Letina INOX and distributed exclusively by Core Equipment, they offer winemakers the flexibility to store different juice varieties within a single tank. As harvest yields vary year by year, the compartments help preserve juice quality without compromising on storage space. With up to three or more compartments per tank, they maximise floor space by reducing the need for additional tanks.
  • Enhanced Temperature Control – Maintaining consistent temperature is crucial for quality winemaking. Compartment tanks are equipped with advanced temperature control jackets that promote even heat distribution through natural convection. As the heat rises from the bottom of the tank, it self-mixes with the cooler liquid, ensuring uniform temperature throughout the entire process without the need for mechanical mixing.
  • Fermentation Control – Regulating fermentation temperatures is essential for producing high-quality wine. The winery’s tanks are equipped with a cutting-edge temperature control system, discreetly managed by stainless-steel piping, pressure regulation, and both individual and centralised tank temperature monitoring. This system allows the winery to maintain low temperatures or control fermentation efficiently, with the option for remote access to monitor tank temperatures from anywhere.

This custom-built solution, featuring advanced technology from the Bucher Origin press through the Letina tanks to the LiquoSystems control system, has raised the bar for UK wineries, ensuring stability and precision throughout the winemaking process and helping Nene Valley Winery produce truly exceptional wines.

“What started as an idea over a cup of tea on a Northamptonshire farm evolved into a fully operational contract winery. To bring their vision to life we had several meetings, and a trip to one of the largest winery trade shows in Milan. This was to ensure that the right equipment was selected to make sure every part of build was right. We are all justifiably proud of the result”.
