Core Equipment and Defined Wine have a long history of working together. Henry Sugden, CEO of Defined Wine spotted an opportunity, with the growth of vineyards in the UK to make wine for vineyard owners and decided to open a contract wine making facility winery in 2019. To grow his existing winery Henry turned to Core Equipment to deliver an additional 100+ tank, state of the art facility in 2023 adding a further 300,000 litres of tank capacity with full fermentation control systems.

In 2024, Henry decided to open a second winery in Suffolk to better serve vineyards North of the Thames. Core Equipment was once again entrusted with the project. Their role was critical, ensuring that the new facility in Sussex not only matched the capabilities of the original winery in Kent but also pushed the boundaries of what could be achieved in terms of technology and sustainability and could be delivered on time. The project was not just about increasing capacity; it was about creating a facility that could cater to the diverse needs of Defined Wine’s clients, many of whom are passionate about producing unique, high-quality wines that reflect the character of their vineyards.
Core Equipment delivered and installed new tank capacity and fermentation control systems, allowing for precise management of the winemaking process, from vine to bottle. The installation of flexible tank configurations means that the winery can easily adapt to different grape varieties and production scales, future proofing the operation and reducing the environmental impact of the winemaking process—an increasingly important factor for both producers and consumers in today’s market.

Dan Tomlin, Sales manager of Core Equipment commented “continuing to support Henry and the Defined Wine team in their growth in East Anglia has been a pleasure. The increased demand for exceptional wine making goes hand in hand with the service and offering provided by Core Equipment”
The successful completion of the Sussex winery marks a significant milestone in Defined Wine’s journey. It enhances their ability to serve a broader range of clients and underscores their dedication to the art and science of winemaking.
Henry Sugden commented: “It has been a pleasure to work with Core Equipment once again. We have been able to design all the tanks to exactly match our needs and having regular project management meetings has ensured the project was delivered on time and on budget. People have been surprised at how quickly the winery has become operational, but this has been the result of two years of planning and working with the Core team I was never in any doubt that it wouldn’t happen. The winery in East Anglia is testament to the interest in the region and we look forward to making great wines for people there”
For Core Equipment, the project is another testament to their expertise in delivering tailored, turnkey solutions that meet the specific needs of the wine industry.
